OT

The Old Testament (also called the Tanakh) is the collection of 39 books that comprise 3/4 of the Bible. All of these 39 books were literally inspired “breathed out” by God to the human writers. There has been much debate about exactly how the information was transmitted from God to the writers. Two facts, however, are not in dispute;

(1) The personalities and writing styles of the human writers show in each book.

(2) Each of the 39 books of the Old Testament shows unmistakeable signs of complete authenticity and total historical accuracy.

The timeline below gives you and idea of when the various books were written and what time periods they cover. Some of the Old Testament writers knew each other. In cases where this happened, it is noted in the particular book.

The Old Testament was written in Hebrew. This was the Word that God gave to the people He called ‘Israel’. There are three divisions in the Old Testament. These are;

The Law - Rules for living. How to please God. How to have a good relationship with God.

The Writings - Historical books that demonstrate God’s actions throughout history. These books show God’s undying love for His people and His perfect judgment against the disobedient.

The Prophets - Biblical prophets had two functions. Sometimes they foretold the future. Sometimes they explained current events. The prophets in the Bible each did some of both functions. Their books are easiest to understand when read in conjunction with the Writings that apply to their specific time period.
