Whenever we read the newspapers or watch tv news, the so-called ‘separation of church and state’ rule is often mentioned. This rule is not in the U.S. Constitution and it is not a law. It is simply an opinion, and a very good one, but an opinion nonetheless. In recent years we have seen this fact proven as religious leaders such as Jesse Jackson, Pat Robertson (boy, those are two totally opposite guys!) and others have run for the presidency. There is no law against religious organizations stating their opinions or supporting candidates. This is why any religious leader can run for office, just like any other US citizen.
What the Constitution does say is that government cannot establish an official religion. This is the reason why Americans have freedom of religion. Any of us can practice any religion we wish. We even have the freedom to make up our own religion if we want to so do.
The position of New Church Austin is that we want you to understand what the Bible says about government. If you can get a good understanding of God’s commands concerning political rulers, then you can easily determine which candidates deserve your vote, and which local, state and federal propositions you should vote for or against.
We want you to learn what the Bible says so you can make informed decisions.
